Weekend Report

Local:

-BIG 105 presents the Christmas Bazaar Craft Show & Sale, Saturday and Sunday at Westerner Park. Two days of holiday shopping with over 200 exhibitors, plus local demonstration stages, and for the kids, Candy Cane Corner and pictures with Santa! Admission is a non-perishable food item to the Red Deer Food Bank or a cash donation to the Red Deer Christmas Bureau.

-The annual RCMP Charity Checkstop will be held Saturday 11am-4-m along Taylor Drive north of 32nd Street. The RCMP will be collecting donations of food, hats, mitts, gloves, new toys and cash to help the Food Bank, MADD and the Christmas Bureau.

-The Salvation Army is holding their Santa Shuffle fun run in Red Deer, Saturday starting at 9:30am at the Running Room. Over 100 runner and walkers will be participating in this event to raise funds for the work of the Salvation Army at Christmas Time.

-The Rocky Mountain House ‘Parade of Lights’ starts at 7pm at the top of Main street. The parade has over 50 floats with each float having a minimum of 500 lights followed by Winterfest.

- West Park Community Association’s annual WinterFest is Sunday at Heritage Ranch starting at 1pm. Enjoy hot chocolate, treats, and sleigh rides! There will also be activities for kids.

Sports:

-The Red Deer Rebels are looking to snap their seven game losing streak Friday as they are in Brandon taking on the Wheat Kings. Saturday the boys will be in Regina taking on the Pats. The Rebels also have stops in Moose Jaw and Swift Current before returning home next Friday. All games on 106.7 The Drive.

-Heritage Junior B action has Stettler at Mountainview Friday. Blackfalds visits Red Deer and Stettler is in Three Hills on Saturday. Banff Academy at Ponoka Sunday.

-Chinook Hockey League play shows Stony Plain in Innisfail Friday. Saturday has Bentley at Stony Plain and Innisfail at Ft. Saskatchewan.

-And a busy week for the RDC athletic department. Friday has Queens hockey at Mount Royal while the volleyball squad is home to Grant MacEwan Friday and Saturday.

No new movies are opening up in Red Deer theatres. I’m still eager to see The Muppets.

Saturday Night Live features Steve Buscemi with musical guest The Black Keys.


And looking ahead to next week, there will be a blood donor clinic in honour of Joshua who, at the age of 3, was diagnosed with Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD). Sadly, Joshua passed away last april and his family and friends are holding the blood drive and bone marrow swab clinic Monday at Canadian Blood Services Red Deer from 2-7pm. Weekend Report

Local

- BIG 105 presents Bull Skit, Friday and Saturday at the Scott Block Downtown at 8pm. This month is hosted by Mayor Morris Flewelling with musical guest “Midwest Mindset”. Tickets are available for $22 at the door, cash only, or at Sunworks.

-BIG 105 presents The Red Deer Festival of Trees. November 22-27th, supporting the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation. The Taste of Red Deer and Festival of Wines are Friday, Tis the Season Fashion Luncheon and Mistletoe Magic are Saturday and Breakfast with Santa on Sunday.

-RDC Theatre Program presents “Toad of Toad Hall”, running until December 3rd. Tickets are available through the Black Knight Ticket Centre.

-Christmas at the Village runs Friday at the Innisfail and District Historical Village. Gates open at 5pm and admission is by a food bank donation.

-Joe Lovett’s documentary “Going Blind” will be shown at The Hub on Ross Saturday from 2-4pm. Admission is free.

-The Doggy Door in Innisfail is holding their annual Food for Fido Food Drive for homeless dogs. $20 gets your dog a shampoo and condition with money going towards the food drive.

-Women’s Outreach is hosting a Penny Drive at Sobey’s North Hill Sunday from 12-5pm. Donate your unrolled, unwanted pennies and all money collected will go to Women’s Outreach.

Sports

-The Red Deer Rebels are in action twice this weekend as they host Lethbridge Friday and Medicine Hat Saturday. Saturday is the annual BIG 105 Toque Toss Night in support of the Red Deer Christmas Bureau. When the Rebels score their first goal, throw your extra toques, scarves and mitts on the ice.

-Heritage Junior B Hockey has Red Deer at Three Hills and Blackfalds at High River on Friday, Red Deer at Strathmore on Saturday and Strathmore at Blackfalds Sunday.

-Chinook Hockey League action sees Bentley at Carstairs and Innisfail in Sylvan Lake Friday and Bentley at Lloydminster and Innisfail at Stony Plain on Saturday.

-Good luck to the Stettler Wildcats as they take on the Cochrane Cobras in the high school tier three final in Lethbridge.

-And good luck to everyone participating in the Red Deer City Soccer boys indoor tournament this weekend at the Collicut Centre. 36 teams are taking part, ranging from the U10 to U18 age divisions.

Film

-Arthur Christmas, an animated holiday adventure with the voices of Hugh Laurie and James McAvoy.

-The Muppets starring Jason Segal, Amy Adams, Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie, Animal, Rowlf...

-Hugo, a 3D animated fantasy starring Jude Law and Ben Kingsly.

-GH Dawe School Parent Council presents Shop ‘Til You Drop Arts and Craft Show, Saturday 10am – 4pm at GH Dawe. Over 20 vendors will be on hand selling items including Tupperware, Partylite, Avon and Epicure. Bring a food bank donation for a chance to win door prizes.

-Sunnybrook United Church is hosting a bazaar and coffee party Saturday starting at 9:30am. Enjoy coffee, muffins, shopping at the craft table and the White Elephant sale. Admission is by donation.

-The Penhold Indoor Market is Saturday, 10am – 2pm at the Penhold Regional Multiplex. Admission is free.

-The Rocky Craft Show & Sale is Saturday at the Lou Soppit Community Centre in Rocky Mountain House. Admission is free and doors open at 10am, but you are encouraged to bring a food bank donation.

- Only Women’s Fitness will be holding the Gift of Hope Charity Fashion Show and Silent Auction on November 19 at Only Women’s Fitness. Doors will open at 6:30 and the fashion show will start at 7pm. Tickets are $30 and on sale now at Only Women’s Fitness.

-Two games in two nights for the Red Deer Rebels. Friday they are in Lethbridge taking on the Hurricanes. Saturday they are home to the Saskatoon Blades. Saturday will also feature post game fireworks.

-Chinook Hockey League actions Friday has Bentley at Innisfail while Stony Plain visits Sylvan Lake. Both games start at 8:30.

-RDC Kings and Queens Volleyball teams are home to Concordia Friday with first serve at 6pm.

-The Red Deer Ramada Bantam AA Chiefs play the Foothills Bisons Sunday at the Kinsmen Twin Arenas A. Puck drops at 2pm.

-Red Deer City Soccer is hosting its girls indoor tournament this weekend at the Collicutt Centre. 36 teams will take part, including the U10 to U18 age groups. Good luck to all the participants.

-Happy Feet Two, with the voices of Robin Williams, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Elijah Wood. Mumble, The Master of Tap, has a son who is choreo-phobic.

-The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, with Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. It’s the wedding everyone in the Twilight universe has been waiting for. Or is it? (*Spoiler alert: Yes.)
