Local

-Tree House Youth Theatre presents the Roald Dahl's classic "James and the Giant Peach" at the Scott Block Theatre Saturday at 7 pm. Tickets are $5.00 at the door.

Sports

-Central Alberta Lacrosse gets the season underway Friday. Junior B Tier 1 Red Deer Rampage are home to Rockyview. Junior B Tier 2 sees the Red Deer Revenge in Innisfail taking on the Yeti.

-Lindsay Thurber hosts the ASAA 2011 Team Handball Provincial Championships Friday and Saturday. You’re invited to Come and watch the top athletes in Alberta compete for a provincial title. All games are in the main gym with finals on Saturday.

Film

- Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil featuring the voices of Amy Poehler and Patrick Warburton.

-Prom, a teenage comedy with Aimee Teegarden and Nicholas Braun.

-Fast Five, an action thriller with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker.

Saturday Night Live replays the episode with host Dana Carvey and musical guest Linkin Park.

Monday, May 2nd is a busy day as it is the 2010 tax deadline and the federal election. So pay your taxes to a government which may or may not be in power by Tuesday.

Weekend Report

Local:

-Lacombe and District Trade Fair Friday and Saturday at the Lacombe Arena. Home decorating ideas, renovation tips, financial advice and a play place for the kids. $3 to get in or $5 Saturday including the pancake breakfast.

-Sylvan Lake Volunteer Centre hosts the annual Volunteer Awards Gala as part of National Volunteer Week. Volunteeer. Volunteeer. The Gala takes place Friday starting at 6pm at the Sylvan Lake Community Centre. Volunteer. Tickets are $15.

Sports:

-Red Deer Rebels Game 5 goes Saturday night at the Enmax Centrium. BIG 105 staff will be there painting faces and getting you revved up for the game. If you can’t make it, all the games live at 106.7 The Drive.

-The Bentley Generals continue their quest for the Allan Cup. The Generals take to the ice tonight against Fort Frances and if they pull off a victory will be in the final tomorrow afternoon.

Film:

-Rio, an animated feature with the voices of Anne Hathaway and George Lopez.

-Scream 4, a horror flick with Courtney Cox and David Arquette.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One is on DVD Friday.

Saturday Night Live rebroadcasts the episode with Gwyneth Paltrow and musical guest Cee Lo Green.

Lotto Max Jackpot is $50Million with an estimated 39 MaxMillions draws.

Local:

- BIG 105 and Against the Wall Theatre present “Dead Lovers Day”, a rock musical about love, hate, betrayal and insanity. The show runs until April 9th at the Scott Block Theatre. Tickets are $20 at the door.

-RDC Alumni’s Annual Wine Tasting Festival is Friday at the College. Enjoy a wide variety of wine, beer and local gourmet hors d’oeuvres and a chance to win prizes. Tickets are $50/person and available by calling 403-342-3245.

-Ponoka salutes the 75th Anniversary of the Ponoka Stampede Trade Fair takes place Friday and Saturday at the Ponoka Arena Complex. A petting zoo, mechanical bull rides and live entertainment. Admission is $10/family. Find details by calling 403-783-3888.

Sports:

-The Red Deer Rebels entertain Medicine Hat at the Centrium as we kick off round two of the WHL playoffs. The first 4000 fans Friday receive pom poms while the first 2500 Saturday receive fan banners. All the games live at 106.7 The Drive.

-Congrats to The Bentley Generals for winning the McKenzie Cup. They now represent the Pacific on the road to the Allan Cup. The Generals take on the Dundas Real McCoys Tuesday and the Kenora Thistles Wednesday.

-Soul Surfer, based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton. It stars Dennis Quaid and Carrie Underwood.

-Arthur, a remake of the Dudley Moore comedy with Russell Brand and Jennifer Garner.

Local:

-BIG 105 and Against the Wall Theatre present “Dead Lovers Day”, a rock musical about love, hate, betrayal and insanity. The show runs until April 9th at the Scott Block Theatre. Tickets are $20 at the door.

-Saturday is decision day for Bentley as we find out if they are the winner of Kraft Hockeyville 2011. Activities all day include the pancake breakfast, the skills clinic, the best dressed vehicle contest and the RCMP escort to Red Deer. The winner will be announced during Hockey Night In Canada’s late game.

-BIG 105 and Canyon Ski Resort present Spring Fever 2011 with Tight and Bright Friday, Retro Saturday and the 1st Annual Slush Cup on Sunday. BIG 105 will be on location so stop by for your swag.

- Spring Break - Extended Public / Lane Swim added to the schedule at the Recreation Centre. Come in out of the cold for fitness and fun! Regular admission rates apply. $2.50 for children (3 - 12 years) $3.50 for youth (13-17 years) $4.75 for adult (18 plus)

Sports:

-The Red Deer Rebels enjoy some time off after the sweep of the Edmonton Oil Kings. Tickets for games one and two of the second round go on sale Saturday at 10:00am.

-The Red Deer Midget AAA Optimist Rebels are in B.C. Friday for the opening game of the Pacific Regional Championship. They take on the Vancouver Northwest Giants in a best of three with the winner advancing to the national championship.

-The Bentley Generals looking to increase their lead towards the McKenzie Cup Friday as they entertain Fort St. John. Game two begins at 7:00pm.

-Hop, a comedy with James Marsden and the voice of Russell Brand.

-Source Code, a sci-fi thriller with Jake Gyllenhaal.

-BIG 105 presents Gerry Dee at the Memorial Centre Saturday night. This comedy show is a fund raiser for the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter. Tickets are limited and available at the Black Knight Ticket Centre.

-The annual Spruce View Skating Club Ladies Night Out Fundraiser is Saturday at the Spruce View Community Centre. This year’s theme is “Greek Goddess Toga Party”. Tickets are $40 and available by calling Joanne at 403-728-3085.

-Red Deer Rebels embark on the road to the Memorial Cup. Friday and Saturday the boys home to the Edmonton Oil Kings. Game time is 7:30 and BIG 105 will be on hand face painting in the lobby. If you can’t make it, the action will be broadcast on 106.7 The Drive.

- Red Deer’s Midget AAA Optimist Rebels Red Deer’s Midget AAA Optimist Rebels hold a two games to one lead in their best of five against Leduc.

-Red Deer Midget AAA Girls are home Friday as the Sutter Fund Chiefs take on the Edmonton Thunder in game three of their series. Puck drop is 8pm at the Arena.

Film

-Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules based on the books by Jeff Kinney.

-Sucker Punch, an action thriller with Jon Hamm and Emily Browning.

Saturday is also Earth Hour as we encourage you to remove yourself from the power grid from 8:30-9:30pm. Last year, Red Deer citizens helped save enough energy to run The City’s entire traffic light system continuously for 10 days or power 30 houses for an entire month.

Sunday is the 40th annual Juno Awards, hosted by Drake. Performers include recent Grammy-winning Montreal rockers Arcade Fire, Sarah McLachlan, Broken Social Scene, Chromeo, Johnny Reid and Hedley. Meanwhile, awards will be presented by Barenaked Ladies, Bryan Adams, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Daniel Lanois, Deadmau5, K'naan, Robbie Robertson, Rush and Shad.

Next week is Spring Break for most kids in Central Alberta. Canyon Ski Resort has their Spring Fever 2011 running all week with a different theme each day, capping off with their first ever Slush Cup next Sunday. BIG 105 will be on location with lots of prizes to give away.
