Weekend Report

Local:

-CYT presents Anne of Green Gables for a week of performances starting Friday. Come see CYT as they take you to Avonlea. Great local, kids theatre. Tickets are $12, seniors and students for $9 and available www.cytcentralalberta.com

-Davenport Church of Christ is hosting their 7th Annual Old Time Country Fair Saturday morning at 10am. Enjoy the Pancake & Sausage Breakfast, Carnival Games, Bake Sale, Hot Dog Lunch Pie & Ice cream. Proceeds go to the Namwianga orphanage in Zambia.

-BIG 105 presents The Buddy Holly Concert tribute show Saturday at the Memorial Centre. There will be music from Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens, and tickets start at $35 at the Memorial Centre Box Office, online at www.ticketcentraloutlet.ca or by calling 403-347-0800.

-Sunday, a BBQ and car wash for the Ultimate Science Trip for kids in middle school goes at Sobey’s south on Gaetz from 11:00am to 5:00pm. All proceeds go directly towards the kids who are attending and fly to Florida next year. They get to go to NASA, Walt Disney World and about a million other places.

Sports:

-Parkland Baseball League action has the Red Deer Razorbacks home to Lacombe at Great Chief Park. First pitch is 7:00pm. Innisfail is in Eckville. Saturday has CArstairs in Rocky Mountain House for a double header. Sunday’s double header features Olds in Lacombe.

-The Central Alberta Buccaneers take their 1-2 record as they visit Garrison Army in St. Albert on Saturday.

-The Red Deer Titans Senior Men are in Calgary taking on the Calgary Canadian Irish Athletic Club on Saturday at noon.

-Red Deer Roller Derby Association presents 'Harmageddon'. Red Deer's Nightshades will be taking on Okanagan Shuswap's Raggedy Rollers Saturday at the Westerner's Prairie Pavillion, starting at 6pm with tickets $15 at the door.

Film:

-Cars 2, the latest project from Disney/Pixar featuring the voices of Owen Wilson and Michael Caine.

-Bad Teacher, a comedy with Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake.

And, of course, the Market at Red Deer runs Saturday at the Arena starting at 8:00am. Make sure you stop by and see the guy from Humble Hummus.

Weekend Report

Local:

-BIG 105 presents the Collicut Centre’s 10th Birthday Celebration running through Saturday. Surf & Turf Extreme runs Friday starting at 7:00pm. Saturday features Let’s Try It starting at 10am.

-Lindsay Thurber is hosting Improv Extravaganza Friday at the school. Tickets are $5 and show time is 7:00pm.

- Christian Youth Theatre presents Anne of Green Gables for a week of performances starting Friday at First Church of the Nazarene. Tickets are $12, seniors and students for $9.

-The Alzheimer Society is holding the Investors Group Memory Walk Saturday at Sunnybrook Farms. Registration is $15 and includes the family BBQ and all proceeds go to local support.

-The legendary Pete Knight Days in Crossfield run Friday through Sunday including the FCA Rodeo Performance Friday, the pancake breakfast and parade Saturday and the Show and Shine Sunday.

-Innisfail is having celebrations Saturday with the Rodeo Parade Saturday at 10:30am followed by the Historic Markerville Icelandic Picnic at noon and the 51st Annual Rodeo at the Daines Ranch. Daines Ranch? Is that new?

-Bowden has a Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast at the Bowden Igloo Arena starting at 9:00am. The Bowden Rodeo Grounds are hosting a Cocke Family Benefit as well. There will be silent and live auctions with games for the kids and beef on a bun.

-The Village of Alix is hosting at 10k run and walk as a fundraiser for the Alberta Children’s Hospital on Saturday. Registration is $15.00 by calling Megan at (403) 788-3878.

-Sylvan Lake sports a Family Fun Run of 2.5 or 10 km beginning at Best Body Fitness at 10:00am. The walk or run is designed for the entire family.

Sports

-Parkland Baseball League action has Beiseker in Red Deer to take on the Razorbacks with the first pitch set for 7:00pm, weather permitting. Innisfail is in Rocky Mountain House. Saturday features two double headers with Eckville playing two in Olds while Rocky has a pair in Beiseker.

Film

-Mr. Popper’s Penguins, a family comedy starring Jim Carrey about a man who is sent a penguin from an arctic expedition.

-Green Lantern, the big screen adaptation of the DC Comic hero. It stars Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively and a lot of CGI.

LottoMax jackpot is an estimated $23Million. Just think; you could afford one of those fancy new suites at the Enmax Centrium.


Happy Father’s Day to all the dad’s out there; the definition of what a super hero actually is.

Weekend Report

Local:

-Innisfail is holding a community fundraiser for the residents of Slave Lake. The town wide garage sale and fundraiser goes at the Innisfail Legion until 6:00pm.

-Rocky Mountain House Rodeo Finals run through Sunday with another year of pro rodeo, pony chuck wagon and chariot racing. This year the rodeo has chosen Red Deer’s Walk for ALS as it’s charity. (Is it weird the Rodeo Clowns are sponsored by Rocky Funeral Service?)

-Penhold Days is Saturday with the pancake breakfast at 8:00am. The parade starts at 10:30 with the day including monster trucks, a bounce house and 18 foot slide and the fair. Dinner and dancing starts at 5:30.

-The Eighth Annual Carstar Soaps It Up for Cystic Fibrosis National Car Wash Fundraiser is Saturday at Carstar Red Deer, 4517 54th Ave. Volunteers are hoping to wash their way to a new Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Car Wash Car wash tickets are $5 and can be purchased at CARSTAR Red Deer or by visiting www.carstar.ca/soapsitup.

-BIG 105 presents Randi Boulton, Saturday at the Memorial Centre. Guests include: Jasmine Whenham, Lin Elder, Don Swift, Steve Arsenault, Laura Lee Lewis, Claude Godin, Marcel Meijers, Joe Mathews, Curtis Labelle and Carl Stretton. Tickets are $23.50 and available at the door or through Central Alberta Theatre.

-BIG 105 presents the Rona MS Bike Tour Saturday and Sunday starting at Red Deer College. The two day bike tour combines cycling with fundraising for the fight against MS. Enjoy the event or make a donation at www.mssociety.ca.

-Super 8, a sci-fi flick from J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg, about a group of friends in a small Ohio town who witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie.

Local:

-BIG 105 presents the 5th Annual Central Alberta Children’s Festival Friday and Saturday at Recreation Park downtown. Enjoy the Bubble Jump Imagination Station, a variety of games and a story corner. A concession will be available Tickets are $5 each or a family of four for $15 and available at the gate.

-BIG 105 presents the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, the all night fundraiser Friday and Saturday at the Crossroads Church Grounds. The event begins at 7:00pm and luminaries will be available for purchase on site. Watch for BIG 105 to win prizes.

-BIG 105 presents Superfights 19, Muay Thai and Kick Boxing Championships Saturday June 4th at the Stockman’s Pavilion, Westerner Park. Doors open at 6:00pm with fights beginning at 7:00pm. Tickets start at $30 and available at Cheney Zen Karate & Kick Boxing.

-Blackfalds Days Friday through Sunday with the Councilor’s Pancake Breakfast Saturdfay at 7am and the Oldies Show and Shine starting at 9:00am across from the Subway. Registration fee is $10 with voting beginning at noon with awards handed out at 3:00pm.

-Winfield Lions “Dodge” Breakfast and 2nd Annual “Wheels In Winfield” Show and Sine runs Saturday in Winfield. Meet Curtis Halvorson and enjoy breakfast starting at 8:00am. Cost is $7 per person.

-“Kick It To The Curb” in Red Deer Saturday and Sunday. Place your unwanted items at the curb. Place stickers or signs on items with the word "FREE". People can drive up and haul them away. Take only the items at the curb marked "free." Don’t be a muttonhead.

Sports:

-The Red Deer Rebels are in Penhold this weekend for their spring prospects camp. The Rebels are on the ice Friday at 3:00pm, Saturday at 3:45pm and Sunday at 9:00am.

-Parkland Baseball League action sees the Red Deer Razorbacks hosting the Olds Athletics.

-High School Soccer has the Lacombe girls visiting Alix. The boys of Notre Dame are at Lindsay Thurber, Olds is in Sylvan Lake and Alix is in Innisfail.

Film:

-X-Men: First Class, a superhero flick with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender.
