Weekend Report

Local

-BIG 105 presents Bull Skit live comedy and improv Friday and Saturday evenings at the Scott Block Theatre downtown. Tickets are $23 at Sunworks or at the door.

-RDC Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the Arts Centre in conjunction with Alberta Art Days. The weekend features cultural activities and free Mainstage shows. There is free admission to all the events with a donation to the Food Bank.

-BIG 105 presents the CIBC Run for the Cure Sunday at Lindsay Thurber High School, raising money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The event goes rain or shine.

-BIG 105 presents the With This Ring Bridal Gala Sunday at the Harvest Centre at Westerner Park. The doors open at 10:00am with fashion shows at 11:30am & 2:00pm.

Sports

-The Red Deer Rebels, ranked third this week in the CHL top ten rankings, have two games in two nights as the boys are in Saskatoon Friday and Prince Albert Saturday. All games can be heard on our brother station 106.7 The Drive.

-The Heritage Junior B Hockey regular season begins this weekend with Blackfalds at Okotoks and Stettler at High River on Friday, Stettler in Red Deer and Ponoka at Coaldale on Saturday and finishes with Ponoka at Medicine Hat on Sunday.

-The Chinook Hockey League has the Bentley Generals home to Fort Saskatchewan and Sylvan Lake at Stony Plain on Saturday with Sylvan Lake hosting Stony Plain Sunday.

-High School Football has Hunting Hills at Wetaskiwin and Notre Dame at Sylvan Lake Friday. Stettler takes on Lindsay Thurber Monday evening as the game was rescheduled for students/staff to attend the funeral for Coach Blair Murray. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

Film

-What’s Your Number, a romantic comedy with Anna Faris and Chris Evans.

-50/50, a heartwarming comedy with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen.

-Dream House, a dramatic thriller with Daniel Craig & Rachel Weisz.

Saturday Night Live features Melissa McCarthy with musical guest Lady Antebellum.

Weekend Report

Local:

-Prayers for Lukas Silent Auction and Benefit is Friday at the Lacombe Memorial Centre starting at 6:30pm. Lukas Oszust was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and all money raised from the live and silent auctions go to his treatment. Tickets are $10 at the door.

-Surf n Turf at the Collicutt Centre Friday night. The water park is open for kids 8-12 starting at 7pm with teens 13-17 taking over at 9pm. They’re very specific: No children or adults allowed!

-Red Deer Optimist Club has chosen the “Red Deer Walk for ALS” as its charity for their upcoming Poker Tournament on September 23 at the North Hill Quality Inn. $100 dollars per person or Corporate tables are available.

-Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life is Saturday at Rotary Park. Registration will begin at 10am. Funds raised support direct programs and services for people living with HIV in Central Alberta.

-Operation Food Lift sees Sky Wings Aviation and the Red Deer Food Bank team up for the annual event Sunday between 9am and 4pm at the Red Deer Airport. For $25 cash or equivalent in food donation you can go for a plane ride over Red Deer. Breakfast and lunch will be available along with a huge yard sale.

Sports:

-The Red Deer Rebels begin their 2011-12 season Friday as they entertain the Kootenay Ice. Enjoy the beverage garden and have your face painted courtesy of the BIG 105 staff before the game. There will also be pre and post game fireworks.

-High school football action sees Hunting Hills visiting Stettler while Lindsay Thurber hosts Lacombe at Great Chief Park starting at 7:30.

-Dolphin Tale, a dramatic flick with Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd.

-Moneyball, a comedic drama with Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill.

-Abduction, an action thriller with Taylor Lautner and Alfred Molina.

Saturday Night Live concludes Season Premiere week with Alec Baldwin and musical guest Radiohead.

Local

-BIG 105 presents Portraits of Honour Friday and Saturday at RDC. It’s a special 2 day event to honour the men and women of our Armed Forces.

-BIG 105 presents The Backyardigans: Quest for the Extra Ordinary Aliens for two shows, 1pm & 4pm at the Memorial Centre. Tickets still available at ticketcentraloutlet.ca.

-Sports Day in Canada is a country wide initiative designed to introduce you to sporting activities in our city which strengthen connections, support excellence, and foster healthy, active lifestyles. Events start at 10am at both G.H. Dawe and the Collicutt Centre.

-Sunday is the annual Terry Fox Run with the 10km bike, walk or run and it’s dog friendly. The event gets underway at noon at Heritage Ranch. Please bring a cash donation for the foundation.

Sports

-The Red Deer Rebels enter the final weekend of pre-season play. Friday the Rebels take on the Oil Kings in Lacombe. Saturday the boys travel to Stettler to take on the Medicine Hat Tigers. Both games at 7:30pm.

- The RDC Kings and Queens host SAIT in ACAC action Saturday at noon at RDC.

-High school football sees Hunting Hills and Lindsay Thurber fight it out Friday at Great Chief Park. Sylvan Lake takes on Lacombe at MEGlobal Athletic Park. The kickoff for both games is 7:30pm.

-In the CFL, Edmonton takes on Hamilton Friday. Saturday sees a double header as Toronto visits Saskatchewan and BC is in Calgary. The weekend wraps up with Winnipeg at Montreal.

Film

-The Lion King, the classic Disney film returning to theatres in 3D for two weeks only.

-I Don’t Know How She Does It, a comedy with Sarah Jessica Parker and Christina Hendricks.

-Drive, an action thriller with Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan.

-Straw Dogs, a dramatic story of cabin fever featuring James Marsden and Kate Bosworth.

Sunday night is the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards with Jane Lynch as host. According to the Canadian Press, when it comes to best drama, Sunday's Emmys are expected to be a race between three-time winner, ``Mad Men'' and newcomer, ``Boardwalk Empire.'' Other shows up for best drama are ``Dexter,'' ``Friday Night Lights,'' ``Game of Thrones'' and ``The Good Wife.'' Last year's comedy winner, ``Modern Family,'' could take the Emmy again on Sunday. Other shows that are nominated for best comedy are: ``30 Rock,'' ``The Big Bang Theory,'' ``Glee,'' ``The Office'' and ``Parks and Recreation.''

Local

- BIG 105 presents Drive In Movies at the Mall. The final show of the season is Friday at Parkland Mall. This week’s film is Turner and Hooch and admission is $10 per vehicle. The Red Deer Food Bank will be on hand selling popcorn and refreshments.

-BIG 105 presents The Innisfail Weekend of Wheels along with Just Ride Productions. Saturday has the Show n Shine in the morning and a drive-in movie of “American Graffiti” in the evening. Sunday will feature the 100 foot shoot out. (Take Hwy 2 into Innisfail as Hwy 2A will have fresh oil on the road.)

-BIG 105 presents the Give The Gift of Life Fun Run and Walk Sunday at the Kiwanis Picnic Centre. Cheer on the teams as they raise money for the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

- The City of Red Deer will host a Memorial March Sunday starting at 9:30am at City Hall Park. Red Deer Emergency Services, the Red Deer County Fire Department and Red Deer R-C-M-P will honour all firefighters and police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty that day.

-Sunday also features the Great Canadian Shoreline initiative. The City of Red Deer invites you to clean up the litter in and around Waskasoo Creek and Piper Creek. Meet at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre starting at 12:30.

Sports

-The Red Deer Rebels continue their preseason schedule Friday as they take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes in Innisfail. The puck drops at 7:30pm. Saturday the boys are in Calgary to take on the Hitmen.

-The AJHL season gets underway Friday as the Olds Grizzlies host St. Albert.

-High School Football Friday afternoon sees Notre Dame hosting Camrose at 4:30pm. Hunting Hills hosts Lacombe and Wetaskiwin visits Rocky Mountain House.

-The Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos hit the field Friday for the Labour Day rematch at Commonwealth Stadium. Calgary looks to rebound after a humiliating loss with sole possession of first place in the west on the line.

Film

-Contagion, a sci-fi thriller with Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne and the rest of Hollywood.

-Warrior, an action flick with Tom Hardy and Jennifer Morrison. If you like seeing sweaty men punch each other, this is the one for you.

On DVD, X-Men: First Class starring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender. I’m still mad they didn’t use me as a creative consultant on this one.

Congratulations to everyone who won tickets to see Maroon 5, Train and Matt Nathanson at Rexall Place in Edmonton on Saturday. A BIG congrats to Shawna Smith who won the meet and greet with Maroon 5 before the show. Have fun!
