Weekend Report

Local

-BIG 105 presents Portraits of Honour Friday and Saturday at RDC. It’s a special 2 day event to honour the men and women of our Armed Forces.

-BIG 105 presents The Backyardigans: Quest for the Extra Ordinary Aliens for two shows, 1pm & 4pm at the Memorial Centre. Tickets still available at ticketcentraloutlet.ca.

-Sports Day in Canada is a country wide initiative designed to introduce you to sporting activities in our city which strengthen connections, support excellence, and foster healthy, active lifestyles. Events start at 10am at both G.H. Dawe and the Collicutt Centre.

-Sunday is the annual Terry Fox Run with the 10km bike, walk or run and it’s dog friendly. The event gets underway at noon at Heritage Ranch. Please bring a cash donation for the foundation.

Sports

-The Red Deer Rebels enter the final weekend of pre-season play. Friday the Rebels take on the Oil Kings in Lacombe. Saturday the boys travel to Stettler to take on the Medicine Hat Tigers. Both games at 7:30pm.

- The RDC Kings and Queens host SAIT in ACAC action Saturday at noon at RDC.

-High school football sees Hunting Hills and Lindsay Thurber fight it out Friday at Great Chief Park. Sylvan Lake takes on Lacombe at MEGlobal Athletic Park. The kickoff for both games is 7:30pm.

-In the CFL, Edmonton takes on Hamilton Friday. Saturday sees a double header as Toronto visits Saskatchewan and BC is in Calgary. The weekend wraps up with Winnipeg at Montreal.

Film

-The Lion King, the classic Disney film returning to theatres in 3D for two weeks only.

-I Don’t Know How She Does It, a comedy with Sarah Jessica Parker and Christina Hendricks.

-Drive, an action thriller with Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan.

-Straw Dogs, a dramatic story of cabin fever featuring James Marsden and Kate Bosworth.

Sunday night is the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards with Jane Lynch as host. According to the Canadian Press, when it comes to best drama, Sunday's Emmys are expected to be a race between three-time winner, ``Mad Men'' and newcomer, ``Boardwalk Empire.'' Other shows up for best drama are ``Dexter,'' ``Friday Night Lights,'' ``Game of Thrones'' and ``The Good Wife.'' Last year's comedy winner, ``Modern Family,'' could take the Emmy again on Sunday. Other shows that are nominated for best comedy are: ``30 Rock,'' ``The Big Bang Theory,'' ``Glee,'' ``The Office'' and ``Parks and Recreation.''
