Weekend Report

Local

- BIG 105 presents Drive In Movies at the Mall. The final show of the season is Friday at Parkland Mall. This week’s film is Turner and Hooch and admission is $10 per vehicle. The Red Deer Food Bank will be on hand selling popcorn and refreshments.

-BIG 105 presents The Innisfail Weekend of Wheels along with Just Ride Productions. Saturday has the Show n Shine in the morning and a drive-in movie of “American Graffiti” in the evening. Sunday will feature the 100 foot shoot out. (Take Hwy 2 into Innisfail as Hwy 2A will have fresh oil on the road.)

-BIG 105 presents the Give The Gift of Life Fun Run and Walk Sunday at the Kiwanis Picnic Centre. Cheer on the teams as they raise money for the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

- The City of Red Deer will host a Memorial March Sunday starting at 9:30am at City Hall Park. Red Deer Emergency Services, the Red Deer County Fire Department and Red Deer R-C-M-P will honour all firefighters and police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty that day.

-Sunday also features the Great Canadian Shoreline initiative. The City of Red Deer invites you to clean up the litter in and around Waskasoo Creek and Piper Creek. Meet at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre starting at 12:30.

Sports

-The Red Deer Rebels continue their preseason schedule Friday as they take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes in Innisfail. The puck drops at 7:30pm. Saturday the boys are in Calgary to take on the Hitmen.

-The AJHL season gets underway Friday as the Olds Grizzlies host St. Albert.

-High School Football Friday afternoon sees Notre Dame hosting Camrose at 4:30pm. Hunting Hills hosts Lacombe and Wetaskiwin visits Rocky Mountain House.

-The Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos hit the field Friday for the Labour Day rematch at Commonwealth Stadium. Calgary looks to rebound after a humiliating loss with sole possession of first place in the west on the line.

Film

-Contagion, a sci-fi thriller with Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne and the rest of Hollywood.

-Warrior, an action flick with Tom Hardy and Jennifer Morrison. If you like seeing sweaty men punch each other, this is the one for you.

On DVD, X-Men: First Class starring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender. I’m still mad they didn’t use me as a creative consultant on this one.

Congratulations to everyone who won tickets to see Maroon 5, Train and Matt Nathanson at Rexall Place in Edmonton on Saturday. A BIG congrats to Shawna Smith who won the meet and greet with Maroon 5 before the show. Have fun!
